Farm To City

Although Whole Foods tries it's best, if you don't live in the country or rural suburbs it is hard to get fresh, locally grown food. Farm To City is an organization that brings organic food to cities and urban-suburban areas. One orders what they want for the month on line from an extensive list, and then picks it up weekly at a local participating store.

This way, you get delicious fresh foods, you're supporting local farmers, and you're helping the environment because the food is traveling a very short distance.

Winter_harvest_order

We picked up our first week's order today. There were actually chicken feathers underneath some of the eggs! Cider, milk, homemade butter, cheese and yogurt and bakery-baked bread amongst organic produce. We were even able to order pet food that is 100% ground chicken.

I am sure most cities offer an equivalent program, if you're interested check it out on google.

When I paint my paintings, I listen to soulful music by David Gray, Ben Harper, and Damien Rice. But when I bake, I like to dance around the kitchen, especially to Justin Timberlake.Today I was shakin', and a bakin' Irish soda bread.

What you will need:

  • 3 cups organic flour
  • 2 cups organic raisins
  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • 1/4 cup Smart Balance butter spread
  • 1/3 cup organic raw sugar
  • 1 egg-beaten
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp sea salt

Preheat the oven to 325 degrees. Mix the flour, baking soda, baking powder, sugar, and salt together. Blend the egg and buttermilk together, then add it to the flour mixture. Mix just until moist. Stir in butter.Lastly, fold the raisins into the mix. Pour into 9.5 baking pan. Bake for 65-70 minutes. Wrap overnight and enjoy the next day for best flavor!
